SUMMARY:It's a Kind of Wonder
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with Castlemaine Fringe\n\n\n\nWearable art exhibition\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCurated by Jody Galvin\, Azzy Jay\, Kya Moore\, Ellen Doyle\, Madeleine Somers\, Martin John Lee\, Andi Herman\, Melissa Clark\, Michelle Newton and Kaz McMullan \n\n\n\nThe Castlemaine Fringe Festival brings its signature creativity to the State Festival with It’s a Kind of Wonder – a wearable art exhibition that transforms fashion into fantasy. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition showcases handmade works that are bold\, playful and unapologetically individual. Each piece redefines what it means to wear art – from sculptural headpieces to textile experiments that blure the line between costume and concept. The result is an explosion of colour\, craft and character\, true to Castlemaine’s reputation as a creative melting pot. It’s a Kind of Wonder is an invitation to revel in the weird and wonderful – to see the human body not just as a canvas\, but as a living artwork. \n\n\n\nOpening Hours Friday 20 March – 11am to 4pmSaturday 21 March – 11am to 4pmSunday 22 March – 11am to 4pmFriday 27 March – 11am to 4pmSaturday 28 March – 11am to 4pm

SUMMARY:Portal
DESCRIPTION:By Fionna Madigan\, Lisa McPherson\, Jenny Divers\n\n\n\nYou are warmly invited to enter a portal of remembrance and presence. 7th-22nd February\, Thursday-Sunday\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPainter Fionna Madigan\, and ceramicists Lisa McPherson and Jenny Divers\, invite you through a portal into a soulful and celebratory realm in which to explore space\, psyche\, touch and medicine. \n\n\n\nFionna is an award-winning exhibiting artist whose work straddles a fertile zone between realism and abstraction. Her immersive works are lush and optically playful\, inspired by the forms and flora of the Victorian Goldfields. \n\n\n\nLisa McPherson is a ceramist and a practitioner of East Asian Medicine. Her work involves moving between bodies; human bodies and bodies of clay. These sensitive\, hand-built forms explore notions of touch\, healing and memory. \n\n\n\nJenny Divers’ ceramic practice is inspired by natural and constructed landscapes through which she has lived\, worked and travelled. These contemplative forms investigate place and invite tactile engagement. \n\n\n\nOpening Sunday 8 February\, 4pm to 6pm \n\n\n\nOpening Hours Sat 7 February\, 10-4pmSunday Feb 8 – 10am – 6pm (Opening Reception 4pm – 6pm)Thursday Feb 12 – 10am – 4pmFriday Feb 13 – 10am – 4pmSaturday Feb 14 – 10am – 4pmSunday Feb 15 – 10am – 4pmThursday Feb 19 – 10am – 4pmFriday Feb 20 – 10am – 4pmSaturday Feb 21 – 10am – 4pmSunday Feb 22 – 10am – 4pm

SUMMARY:UNFATHOMABLE: Opening Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Opening Celebration: Saturday 7 December\, 2pm \n\n\n\nUNFATHOMABLE – deep\, inexplicable\, confounding\, lost. \n\n\n\nSome things are just too hard to find words for. Too raw to be exposed. Too difficult to unpack. Featuring new work by 5 central victorian artists\, this exhibition at Lot 19 Gallery in Castlemaine takes that which is hard to explain and transforms it into challenging\, beautiful\, messy\, and inspiring artworks – this is how we talk about the things that are unfathomable. \n\n\n\nMinna Graham (Musk\, 3461) responds to the emotions within grief that feel too overwhelming. Grief\, loss\, and sorrow can be too much to hold inside. Minna creates physical forms—vessels\, containers—that embody these feelings\, giving them a tangible space where they can exist and be processed. These pieces are not about finding answers\, but about creating space to hold what cannot always be said. \n\n\n\nJackie Gorring’s (Allendale\, 3364) relief prints are each a story\, like chapters in a book they come together to form something more complete and deeper than the individual story can tell by itself. Jackie chose these relief prints for Unfathomable because they represent the loss of loved ones or friends who have moved away\, or the loss of herself at times. \n\n\n\nElla Hughes (Guildford\, 3451) has created a small army of golems to hold her grief. A golem will do the work its master asks of it\, and it will keep doing it forever. “There is a culture of shame around grief\,” she says. “we’re criticised for grieving too much or too little\, too loudly\, or too quietly.” Ella has also created sculptural works that are part homage\, part portrait\, and part commemoration. Like a statue that would be created for a famous person\, these pieces pay a very personal homage to the women in her life who gifted her a love of craft\, textiles and making. Ella Hughes lives in Guildford but makes ceramics in her studio at Lot 19 in Castlemaine. \n\n\n\nWorking with found clay from around central Victoria Chandra Paul (Clunes\, 3370) has conducted numerous experiments to make vessels from the very ground beneath her. This is a highly technical and multilayered process that takes extraordinary amounts of time. Chandra says that her experiences have taught her that there is beauty in the weathered\, uneven\, transient and unfinished. Flaws are meaningful\, normal and harbour memory. \n\n\n\nDannielle Wilkinson’s (Castlemaine\, 3450) work for this exhibition\, My father called me barren\, explores the unique relationship between women and their reproductive system….in particular\, the fact that these are the only organs in the body that we are asked if we are using them or wasting them. Every woman will have a distinctly individual relationship with this part of their body and will respond differently to conversation and questions that surround it\, and every one of those relationships is valid and should be heard. \n\n\n\nThese artworks have the capacity to handle the complexity of emotions that we find hard to articulate or bear. In many ways the artworks are better at expressing our innermost thoughts and feelings than we are ourselves. \n\n\n\nGallery open 10am-4pm\, Saturday & Sunday\, 7 – 22 December.
