SUMMARY:Luminate: Summer Solstice Community Philosophy Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The world is heating up. The shadows are illuminated. What happens when we pause and really see what’s around us? This Summer Solstice\, we invite you to explore what’s illuminated when we truly pay attention to where we are — in both place and time. \n\n\n\nJoin us for a community philosophy walkshop designed to help us connect with the world around us. In this two-hour experience\, we’ll practice the art of observation and collective meaning-making through reading\, walking\, and creating together. It’s an invitation to wander\, listen\, and reflect. \n\n\n\nWe’ll journey across a 1km route\, weaving threads of thought as we stop to share\, read\, and map the things that matter to us. Along the way\, we’ll explore how our surroundings shape our understanding and deepen our connection to the world. \n\n\n\nDetails: \n\n\n\nDistance: 1km over 2 hours\, with regular stops. The route includes dirt paths and some inclines. \n\n\n\nDate: Saturday\, December 21st \n\n\n\nTime: 6:00 PM sharp \n\n\n\nDeparture: lot19 \n\n\n\nPlease reach out if you have any accessibility concerns and we will do our best to accommodate your needs to ensure a comfortable experience for all. \n\n\n\nFAQs \n\n\n\nWhat is community philosophy?Community Philosophy is a practice of thinking together about the big ideas with compassion\, humility and tenderness.Who is running this workshop? This workshop is run by Dr Kelly Lee Hickey\, an artist and community philosopher. She developed her community philosophy practice through her creative PhD\, which developed a series of creative and place based practices to support communities responding to social and ecological crisis. She has delivered community philosophy workshops and events at arts festivals and conferences across Australia\, and online. Who is this workshop for?Anyone who is wondering how to navigate these times\, or struggling to find direction and hope in the current political and social climate. It is especially useful for activists\, and others involved in front line struggles for social and ecological justice. \n\n\n\nPLEASE NOTE: THIS WORKSHOP IS NOT A THERAPEUTIC SPACE\, NOR IS IT A SUBSTITUTE FOR THERAPY. WHILE WE AIM FOR A CARE-FULL SPACE\, ALL PARTICIPANTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR WELL BEING AND ACTIONS\, DURING AND AFTER THE EVENT.

SUMMARY:UNFATHOMABLE: Opening Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Opening Celebration: Saturday 7 December\, 2pm \n\n\n\nUNFATHOMABLE – deep\, inexplicable\, confounding\, lost. \n\n\n\nSome things are just too hard to find words for. Too raw to be exposed. Too difficult to unpack. Featuring new work by 5 central victorian artists\, this exhibition at Lot 19 Gallery in Castlemaine takes that which is hard to explain and transforms it into challenging\, beautiful\, messy\, and inspiring artworks – this is how we talk about the things that are unfathomable. \n\n\n\nMinna Graham (Musk\, 3461) responds to the emotions within grief that feel too overwhelming. Grief\, loss\, and sorrow can be too much to hold inside. Minna creates physical forms—vessels\, containers—that embody these feelings\, giving them a tangible space where they can exist and be processed. These pieces are not about finding answers\, but about creating space to hold what cannot always be said. \n\n\n\nJackie Gorring’s (Allendale\, 3364) relief prints are each a story\, like chapters in a book they come together to form something more complete and deeper than the individual story can tell by itself. Jackie chose these relief prints for Unfathomable because they represent the loss of loved ones or friends who have moved away\, or the loss of herself at times. \n\n\n\nElla Hughes (Guildford\, 3451) has created a small army of golems to hold her grief. A golem will do the work its master asks of it\, and it will keep doing it forever. “There is a culture of shame around grief\,” she says. “we’re criticised for grieving too much or too little\, too loudly\, or too quietly.” Ella has also created sculptural works that are part homage\, part portrait\, and part commemoration. Like a statue that would be created for a famous person\, these pieces pay a very personal homage to the women in her life who gifted her a love of craft\, textiles and making. Ella Hughes lives in Guildford but makes ceramics in her studio at Lot 19 in Castlemaine. \n\n\n\nWorking with found clay from around central Victoria Chandra Paul (Clunes\, 3370) has conducted numerous experiments to make vessels from the very ground beneath her. This is a highly technical and multilayered process that takes extraordinary amounts of time. Chandra says that her experiences have taught her that there is beauty in the weathered\, uneven\, transient and unfinished. Flaws are meaningful\, normal and harbour memory. \n\n\n\nDannielle Wilkinson’s (Castlemaine\, 3450) work for this exhibition\, My father called me barren\, explores the unique relationship between women and their reproductive system….in particular\, the fact that these are the only organs in the body that we are asked if we are using them or wasting them. Every woman will have a distinctly individual relationship with this part of their body and will respond differently to conversation and questions that surround it\, and every one of those relationships is valid and should be heard. \n\n\n\nThese artworks have the capacity to handle the complexity of emotions that we find hard to articulate or bear. In many ways the artworks are better at expressing our innermost thoughts and feelings than we are ourselves. \n\n\n\nGallery open 10am-4pm\, Saturday & Sunday\, 7 – 22 December.

SUMMARY:Wordspoken Edition IV: Another brick in the wall\, another slip in the fall
DESCRIPTION:WORDSPOKEN Edition IV : Another brick in the wall\, another slip in the fall \n\n\n\nJoin us at LOT 19 for a playful fourth edition WORDSPOKEN. Featuring Maggie Clare\, Patch Pheasant and Derry Doyle\, we explore matters of heart\, the infinite masks we carry and the mystery of never fully being any one thing at any one time. Expect caberet with frayed edges\, a tug on the heart strings and perhaps a flame or two. Or\, don’t expect anything… How novel. \n\n\n\nMAGGIE CLARE Shapeshifter par excellence\, Maggie dances the borders between worlds\, spooling out stories till they break and roll back to the beginning. Along the way\, she might try on the guise of poet\, carnie\, clown\, wisewoman… It all depends on which way the wind blows\, and your luck. \n\n\n\nPATCH PHEASANT Spacious cello tunes and song straight from the heart – Patch has been making musical-ish sounds for as long as anyone can remember. He draws inspiration from folk traditions\, enjoying time travelling through old tunes and bringing them to life. \n\n\n\nCurious about what all this might mean? So is he…Suggestions welcome. \n\n\n\nDERRY DOYLE Derry Doyle is the fly on the wall that rummages for romance in the mundane and spins yarns with a fiercely Australian tongue. He swears like a saint\, is sensitive as a sailor\, and never lets the truth get in the way of a good story. This will be Derry’s second contribution to WORDSPOKEN – we’re hooked. \n\n\n\nPrevious sold-out events have included performances from Felicity Cripps\, Eliza Hull\, Thumbnail Green\, Noa Dakota\, Derry Doyle\, Ezra Demcy\, Claudia Lang and Sam Thomas. \n\n\n\nSnacks & drinks available for purchase or by donation.

SUMMARY:Speaking of Renewal: Spring Community Philosophy Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The days grow longer. The weather warms. The wind changes.Trees draw their sap up from their roots. New shoots emerge. What wisdom have we gathered from our winter hibernation? What nourishment might we offer our new shoots?Reading is a pathway into other times/worlds/perspectives. It is a way of drawing meaning up from the roots of the collective unconscious. This spring workshop presents reading together as a collective philosophical practice. Through collective reading and reflection we will draw out and share wisdom gleaned from pages of poetry\, fragments of essays and other writing that nourishes and help us grow.Participants are invited to bring an excerpt of text to share. \n\n\n\nAll other materials and morning tea provided. \n\n\n\nRegistrations required. If finance is a barrier to attendance\, please get in touch with lot19.

SUMMARY:Wordspoken: Felicity Cripps and Thumbnail Green
DESCRIPTION:WORDSPOKEN: Spoken Word in the W-Class Tram \n\n\n\nJoin us at lot19 for a very special equinox edition of WORDSPOKEN. This edition\, we dance with poetic balance and the tension between dream and reality\, light and dark. Featuring local and much loved singer/songwriter Felicity Cripps and sharp witted Thumbnail Green\, with appearances from Sam Thomas and Claudia Lang. \n\n\n\nAn honouring of the eternal now\, this is lo-fi\, lo-lit evening will usher you into the season of light with grace\, honesty and equilibrium. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE ARTISTS \n\n\n\nHaving just released her second ‘FCB’ album\, singer/songwriter Felicity Cripps is softly launching her new album\, Chasing Volcanoes – a heartfelt offering\, shimmering with nostalgia and psychedelic tinctures. The new recording features a full band\, creating lush soundscapes\, supporting Felicity’s dreamy\, dark and ethereal vocals. The power of these songs is undeniable when performed solo – each song is brought to life in an acoustic setting\, just vocals and acoustic guitar\, with occasional drum machines and glimmers of the band\, backing an otherwise minimal set. The stories and subtleties behind each song really shine in this stripped-back arrangement\, as Felicity draws her audience into another realm; searching for meaningful connections and portals into other worlds. \n\n\n\nTHUMBNAIL GREEN \n\n\n\nThumbnail Green writes dissident politihop for the times. Hip Hop started as ‘information music’ so protest and awareness could spread from African American neighborhoods. In the true spirit of the art form\, and with a repudiation of the consumerist music landfilling our air waves\, Thumbnail Green writes large about big issues that impact almost everyone on some level. Seeking to make palatable that which is often hard to swallow\, the current round of releases combine humour\, imagery\, funk and serious wordplay. The single ‘Doomsday Prepper’ was a self-effacing look at self-preservation. ‘On a Watch List’ is a scathing retort to the phone surveillance we all live with. The latest release ‘Bounty Hunter’ is a dark fantasy where Aussie farmers find creative and gothic ways to dispose of useless eliters. It’s clever music so keep your mind sharp and your ears open – you may get triggered but you won’t be disappointed. \n\n\n\nSnacks & drinks available for purchase or by donation.

SUMMARY:Augury: Ken Killeen
DESCRIPTION:Augury: Ken Killeen\n\n\n\nOpens Saturday 10 August\, 2pm\n\n\n\nAugury: prophetic divining of the future by observation of natural phenomena – particularly the behaviour of birds and their flight patterns or the examination of their entrails and other parts.Exploring the totemic qualities of birds\, Ken Killeen’s latest series of works are painted in a range of styles and with a range of media\, including acrylic and oil paint\, watercolour and ink.Augury is Ken Killeen’s first solo show for several years\, but making art has been a constant factor in his life alongside teaching art. This exhibition is a collection of paintings mostly of birds with an occasional snake or spider\, demonstrating a deep understanding of the formal elements of artmaking\, technical prowess and a certain whimsy. The paintings contain layers of meaning\, where the birds are symbols of ‘freedom\, hope\, spirit\, transition\, initiation and new opportunities. These paintings are allegorical and mythic\, with allusions to arcane lore and totemism.Beyond the literal\, the major motivation for these works was the use of birds as symbols\, the mythological dimension of birds\, and birds as spirit messengers. Ken has been making art for the last 50 years\, and has exhibited  in Melbourne\, Canberra\, Adelaide and Sydney\, as well as having work in the collection of the National Gallery of Victoria\, Hamilton Regional Art Gallery and Artbank\, as well as numerous private collections. Augury is open 11am-4pm\,Saturday & Sunday\, from 10 – 25 August.

SUMMARY:Wordspoken: Noa Dakota\, Derry Doyle\, Ezra Demcy
DESCRIPTION:WORDSPOKEN: Spoken Word in the W-Class Tram \n\n\n\nJoin us at LOT 19 for the next edition of WORDSPOKEN. This edition is a celebration of magic of oral tradition\, and not-so-tradition. \n\n\n\nLocal creatives Noa Dakota \, Derry Doyle and Ezra Demchy make up this not-to-be-missed triple bill of local creation. Immerse yourself in the magic of language and a celebration of human stories. An honouring of the present moment\, this is lo-fi\, lo-lit evening designed to tickle the corners of your mind that you didn’t even know you’d left to catch dust. \n\n\n\nNoa Dakota ~ Intrepid with her wanderings and her words\, Noa Dakota has always found some kind of solace in and with the written word. A desire to return more deeply to self-expression found her writing poetry daily for a good four and a half years\, before adopting a slightly less fixed but still near daily practice. Fascinated by poetry’s capacity to tell much with little\, Noa writes stream of consciousness to explore the poetry of everyday existence. \n\n\n\nDerry Doyle is the fly on the wall that rummages for romance in the mundane and spins yarns with a fiercely Australian tongue. He swears like a saint\, is sensitive as a sailor\, and never lets the truth get in the way of a good story. \n\n\n\nEzra Demchy ~ An honest to god shape from the 17th dimension. Ezra the Messenger makes his own beats\, rhymes\, breakfast\, lunch and dinner. An unmistakable talent\, you’ll be kicking rocks if you miss him. So\, if god be willing and the river don’t rise\, he will see you at Lot19 on the 27th of July! \n\n\n\nSnacks & drinks available for purchase. =
