SUMMARY:Wordspoken: Felicity Cripps and Thumbnail Green
DESCRIPTION:WORDSPOKEN: Spoken Word in the W-Class Tram \n\n\n\nJoin us at lot19 for a very special equinox edition of WORDSPOKEN. This edition\, we dance with poetic balance and the tension between dream and reality\, light and dark. Featuring local and much loved singer/songwriter Felicity Cripps and sharp witted Thumbnail Green\, with appearances from Sam Thomas and Claudia Lang. \n\n\n\nAn honouring of the eternal now\, this is lo-fi\, lo-lit evening will usher you into the season of light with grace\, honesty and equilibrium. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE ARTISTS \n\n\n\nHaving just released her second ‘FCB’ album\, singer/songwriter Felicity Cripps is softly launching her new album\, Chasing Volcanoes – a heartfelt offering\, shimmering with nostalgia and psychedelic tinctures. The new recording features a full band\, creating lush soundscapes\, supporting Felicity’s dreamy\, dark and ethereal vocals. The power of these songs is undeniable when performed solo – each song is brought to life in an acoustic setting\, just vocals and acoustic guitar\, with occasional drum machines and glimmers of the band\, backing an otherwise minimal set. The stories and subtleties behind each song really shine in this stripped-back arrangement\, as Felicity draws her audience into another realm; searching for meaningful connections and portals into other worlds. \n\n\n\nTHUMBNAIL GREEN \n\n\n\nThumbnail Green writes dissident politihop for the times. Hip Hop started as ‘information music’ so protest and awareness could spread from African American neighborhoods. In the true spirit of the art form\, and with a repudiation of the consumerist music landfilling our air waves\, Thumbnail Green writes large about big issues that impact almost everyone on some level. Seeking to make palatable that which is often hard to swallow\, the current round of releases combine humour\, imagery\, funk and serious wordplay. The single ‘Doomsday Prepper’ was a self-effacing look at self-preservation. ‘On a Watch List’ is a scathing retort to the phone surveillance we all live with. The latest release ‘Bounty Hunter’ is a dark fantasy where Aussie farmers find creative and gothic ways to dispose of useless eliters. It’s clever music so keep your mind sharp and your ears open – you may get triggered but you won’t be disappointed. \n\n\n\nSnacks & drinks available for purchase or by donation.

SUMMARY:Augury: Ken Killeen
DESCRIPTION:Augury: Ken Killeen\n\n\n\nOpens Saturday 10 August\, 2pm\n\n\n\nAugury: prophetic divining of the future by observation of natural phenomena – particularly the behaviour of birds and their flight patterns or the examination of their entrails and other parts.Exploring the totemic qualities of birds\, Ken Killeen’s latest series of works are painted in a range of styles and with a range of media\, including acrylic and oil paint\, watercolour and ink.Augury is Ken Killeen’s first solo show for several years\, but making art has been a constant factor in his life alongside teaching art. This exhibition is a collection of paintings mostly of birds with an occasional snake or spider\, demonstrating a deep understanding of the formal elements of artmaking\, technical prowess and a certain whimsy. The paintings contain layers of meaning\, where the birds are symbols of ‘freedom\, hope\, spirit\, transition\, initiation and new opportunities. These paintings are allegorical and mythic\, with allusions to arcane lore and totemism.Beyond the literal\, the major motivation for these works was the use of birds as symbols\, the mythological dimension of birds\, and birds as spirit messengers. Ken has been making art for the last 50 years\, and has exhibited  in Melbourne\, Canberra\, Adelaide and Sydney\, as well as having work in the collection of the National Gallery of Victoria\, Hamilton Regional Art Gallery and Artbank\, as well as numerous private collections. Augury is open 11am-4pm\,Saturday & Sunday\, from 10 – 25 August.

SUMMARY:Wordspoken: Noa Dakota\, Derry Doyle\, Ezra Demcy
DESCRIPTION:WORDSPOKEN: Spoken Word in the W-Class Tram \n\n\n\nJoin us at LOT 19 for the next edition of WORDSPOKEN. This edition is a celebration of magic of oral tradition\, and not-so-tradition. \n\n\n\nLocal creatives Noa Dakota \, Derry Doyle and Ezra Demchy make up this not-to-be-missed triple bill of local creation. Immerse yourself in the magic of language and a celebration of human stories. An honouring of the present moment\, this is lo-fi\, lo-lit evening designed to tickle the corners of your mind that you didn’t even know you’d left to catch dust. \n\n\n\nNoa Dakota ~ Intrepid with her wanderings and her words\, Noa Dakota has always found some kind of solace in and with the written word. A desire to return more deeply to self-expression found her writing poetry daily for a good four and a half years\, before adopting a slightly less fixed but still near daily practice. Fascinated by poetry’s capacity to tell much with little\, Noa writes stream of consciousness to explore the poetry of everyday existence. \n\n\n\nDerry Doyle is the fly on the wall that rummages for romance in the mundane and spins yarns with a fiercely Australian tongue. He swears like a saint\, is sensitive as a sailor\, and never lets the truth get in the way of a good story. \n\n\n\nEzra Demchy ~ An honest to god shape from the 17th dimension. Ezra the Messenger makes his own beats\, rhymes\, breakfast\, lunch and dinner. An unmistakable talent\, you’ll be kicking rocks if you miss him. So\, if god be willing and the river don’t rise\, he will see you at Lot19 on the 27th of July! \n\n\n\nSnacks & drinks available for purchase. =

SUMMARY:The Lantern & The Star: A Community Philosophy Workshop

SUMMARY:That's Just Rubbish: Candy Stevens / Haptic Biographies: Catherine Shields
DESCRIPTION:That’s Just Rubbish: Candy Stevens / Haptic Biographies: Catherine Shields \n\n\n\nThis combined exhibition explores feminist ideas surrounding women and notions of domesticity and nurturing\, reflecting on how we shop\, consume\, dress and dispose in a society that ‘packages’ women’s bodies and their roles in society. \n\n\n\nAs a medium\, soft food packaging in particular is drawn upon to explore feminist ideas surrounding domesticity\, the impact of womens’ return to work as well as the commodification or ‘packaging’ of women’s bodies. \n\n\n\nMultidisciplinary artist Catherine Shields uses a variety of mediums and techniques to re-purpose found materials such as soft single use plastic\, tin\, fabric\, hair and grasses to twist\, sew and enmesh into new forms. Titles such as Entanglement\, Enmeshed\, Mother Lode\, and Empty Nester suggest relations with others\, including objects\, the Earth\, our bodies. Catherine continues to be passionate about the role of re-purposing and ‘making-do’ to speak about the complexity of of personal responsibility to the earth and to ourselves. \n\n\n\nSculptor\, painter and installation artist Candy Stevens is also bent on recycling materials in her practice. Candy thinks that there is enough ‘stuff’ on the planet and so reinvigorates new from old. This at times extends to recycling her sculptures into new works. In the tradition of Arte Povera\, creating works from everyday and discarded objects\, her practice disregards power constructs and financial norms and becomes a meditation on the temporal and ephemeral nature of existence \n\n\n\nThat’s Just Rubbish will be open 11am-4pm from Saturday 11 – Sunday 25 May.
